Description
WW1 medal group of three:

1914 - 1920 British War Medal (LIEUT. V. HOLT.), Territorial Force War Medal 1914 - 1919 (LIEUT. V. HOLT, MIDD'X. R.), India General Service Medal 1908 - 35 Bar: Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919 (CAPT. V. HOLT.).


K.B.E. circa 1955

C.M.G. LG: 8/6/1939, Captain Vyvyan Holt, Oriental Secretary at his Majesty's Embassy at Baghdad.

M.V.O. LG: 14/7/1933.

Medal index card confirms all three awards. He is also entitled to the General Service Medal with bars Iraq & Northern Kurdistan and an Iraq Active Service Medal 1930 - 31.

With details and copy photographs of the recipient. Following his military career he entered the Diplomatic Service, working in the Middle East and Korea. As First Minister in Seoul he warned British citizens to leave 3 weeks before the invasion. He and some of his staff remained in the hope of claiming diplomatic immunity. Not so, the K.P.A. made them Prisoners of War and held them in captivity for almost 3 years. They were finally released to the Russians in April 1953.

Several newspaper articles give detailed accounts of his time in captivity. He went on to become Ambassador in El Salvador. He died on 31/7/1960.

His GSM is known to have been in a private collection in 2005.
