LG: 9/9/1921 - The King has been graciously pleased to make the following appointments to the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India for services during the operations in Mesopotamia: - to be additional Companions of the said Most Exalted Order - Lieutenant Colonel Donald Archibald Dugald McVean, D.S.O., 45th (Rattray's) Sikhs, I.A.
D.S.O. LG: 2/9/1902 - For services during the Mahsud - Waziri Operations.
Bar to D.S.O. LG: 27/6/1919 - Lieutenant Colonel Donald Archibald Dugald McVean, D.S.O., 45th Sikhs, I.A. (Mesopotamia) For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and ability as a battalion commander during operations at Sherqat, 24/30th Oct. 1918. He led his regiment into action after a series of most trying and arduous marches over difficult country, covering over 60 miles in 70 hours, and in the end through a heavy Artillery and M.G. barrage. He displayed courage, determination and leadership of a high order.

Severely wounded in action at Umar Raghza on 5/12/1901.
Mention in despatches for this action vide LG: 8/8/1902 - Captain D.A.D. McVean, 45th Sikhs. For conspicuous gallantry on the 5th December 1901, when Colonal McRae had ordered the retaking of a position which had been prematurely evacuated by one of his picquets. The incident is thus described by Colonel McRae: 'Seeing that it was of the utmost importance to reach the summit, where there was a sangar, before the Mahsuds, he (i.e. Captain McVean) ran up to the top, thereby getting ahead of his men. He arrived at the top at the same time as a Mahsud and fired at him with his revolver, which twice miss fired. The Mahsud had two shots at him, one of which passed through his breast pocket, the other breaking his right wrist.'
