MILITARY MEDAL, GVR issue to Sergeant. Salima, Rhodesia Native Regiment, a very rare East Africa gallantry award and mentioned in despatches - GBP 301.00

Military Medal GVR issue M77 SJT: SALIMA. RHODESIA NATIVE R. M.M. LG: 26/5/1917. Awarded for gallantry in East Africa. The regimental history states the following: - He was one of the first recruits to enlist in the Rhodesia Native Regiment. Salima led important fighting patrols that harassed the enemy when the Rhodesia Native Regiment was besieged at Kitanda in January and February 1917. For this he received the Military Medal which was the first decoration awarded to a black Rhodesia Native Regiment soldier. M.I.D. LG: 22/11/1917. His medal index card only shows his mention in despatches emblem. It is quite possible that he was never issued any Great War campaign medals, making this award his only medal issued. The Rhodesia Native Regiment earned six Military Medals for service in the Great War. Sergeant Salima being awarded the first and one of only two awarded to African recipients. Twenty nine mention in despatches were awarded, ten to African recipients of which Sergeant Salimas award is unique in conjunction with the award of the M.M. Minor edge bruises (VF+)
